Love companions, or sex dolls as they are more commonly known, have progressed over recent years to the degree that they are almost indistinguishable from the real thing. Just take a look at the above image of a Starpery doll, one of the best in the business, to see what I mean.
These days the industry of making and selling love companions has become so big that by 2030 it is expected to have a global net worth of $80 billion! That is a far cry from its humble beginnings of making cheap plastic inflatable dolls for retail in some grubby back street sex shop in the worst parts of the city.
One of the many reasons for the phenomenal growth of manufacturing and selling sex dolls has in part been due to a change in the dynamics of personal relationships with real humans. One of the problems is that relationships with real partners, male or female, can very easily become heavy maintenance with very little reward.
As some users have stated, a love companion costs nothing to maintain, never says no, and poses no risk of passing on any STDs. Some users have even claimed to have developed an emotional attachment (love?) to their love companion, though it cannot be reciprocated. When you think about it, this is not the only case of people personifying an object. The older generation was prone to give a name, and maybe some people still do, to their car, which was almost always a ‘she’. I recall in my childhood secondary school our woodwork teacher had a cane called Betsy, which he used to punish naughty pupils. Thankfully I was never on the receiving end of Betsy’s painful thwack.
Whatever you may think about the idea of having a love companion yourself, it does seem to fill a need for some men and women. And it may surprise you to know that even now you can buy a doll that thanks to AI can speak to you. I imagine it is a rudimentary conversation not unlike the one you can have with Alexa or Siri. But I am sure more advanced versions are being developed even as I write.
