Why Beehiiv Is The New Jewel In The Crown For Writers

Ask any professional financial advisor which is the best approach to investing and he or she will tell you that you should create a mixed portfolio. That portfolio should include investments for the short, medium and long term. You should also have a mix of risks, from low-risk, low return to high-risk, high return. As a freelance writer, that is also how you should go about progressing your career.

Forty-five years ago I was a highly successful freelance copywriter, working mostly for one newspaper. That was good whilst it lasted, but when they laid all freelancers off to save money, I lost not just my job but also my entire career. Not too long after that, I lost my house, car and family. Lesson learned, do not put all your eggs in one basket.

Here I am in 2024 implementing a plan to avoid the risk of losing everything all over again. That is because Medium, on whom I had become over-reliant, decided to pivot and my income took a dive.

Like a lot of writers, I stayed with Medium since it at least still pays me something, and it is showing very positive signs of recovery. However, I have now joined Substack and monetised it. It has been a slow start, but it will only cost me if it starts to generate an income. Even if it takes me a few months, I shall stick with it.

In addition, just in case Medium and Substack both fail, I have created two of my own writing platforms that put me in full control rather than being at the mercy of corporate algorithms.

Again, like Substack, it is early days. However, of the two new sites I now have, I must mention one which gives me a great deal of excitement, simply due to its amazing earning potential.

I first heard about Beehiiv by pure chance and decided to investigate it further. What I found was a site-creating platform that has so many design customisation and income-generating bells and whistles I am in techno-heaven.
