Ever since modern AI digital applications began, with such well-known iterations like ‘Siri’ and ‘Alexa,’ now part and parcel of our daily lives, the burning question has been ‘How close to creating a human can AI get? It is a question that at least one company is attempting to address.

Starpery Technology is presently training a propriety large language model, not unlike ChatGPT, to improve its sex doll product lineup with artificial intelligence. As a result, new sex dolls, or love companions, with hitherto unheard-of human-like capabilities in a male and female form, will soon be on the market.

“Technological challenges remain, particularly in achieving realistic human interaction,” says Starpery CEO Evan Lee. “While simple dialogue is easy, creating interactive responses involves complex model development by specialised software companies.”

“Traditional dolls, supported by a metal skeleton and a silicone exterior, are limited to simple responses and lack the expressive capabilities needed to engage with a human,” says the South China Morning Post.

“The new generation of sex dolls, powered by AI models and equipped with sensors, can react with both movements and speech, significantly enhancing user experience by focusing on emotional connection rather than just basic conversational abilities,” says the CEO, Lee. He went on to say,

“In addition to sexbots, Starpery Technology plans to develop robots capable of performing household tasks, helping people with disabilities, and providing care for the elderly. By 2025, the company wants to release its first “smart service robot” capable of providing more complex services to people with disabilities. According to the company’s plan, by 2030, these robots will be able to take over some of the work that is dangerous for humans.”

However, there are a multitude of technical, cost, ethical and legal considerations to take into account long before a fully functioning humanoid can be brought to market. Dedicated onboard battery power needs to be developed, and a skeletal framework that does not easily fall over, or can get back up if it does, also needs to be designed, and it all has to be achieved at a cost-effective price to make it a sound commercial proposition. We also need to ask ourselves some searching questions, like “Just because we can do something, does that mean that we should? What could be the human and social consequences of creating such a product?” So there is a great deal of background work that needs to be undertaken over the next decade.

In the meantime, the creation of sex dolls performs a role in terms of addressing a variety of human needs, such as on-demand sexual satisfaction and companionship, not to mention the benefits to society of providing employment and producing a globally desirable product which has enormous potential to generate income and enhance the GDP of those countries that produce and market the product.
