If you think about it, AI is nothing new, it has been with us for a long time. Sometime around 1440 a German goldsmith named Johannes Guttenberg invented the movable type printing press, which started the Printing Revolution. And here we are, almost 600 years later with widespread automated manufacturing, and then some, which also goes back to the British Industrial Revolution, from 1760 to 1840.

In the here and now of 2024, after a centuries-old post-natal gestation period, AI has re-taken off and now is part and parcel of just about every sphere of modern-day life. Where it seems to be most prevalent, at least on the surface, is in the industries of manufacturing and driving cars, and in modern-day communications systems. The two are, to some degree, intertwined. For example, the image of the Tesla at the head of this article was generated using AI. And, although this article was written by yours truly, its publication was ably assisted by AI computer software. The beauty of AI is that it takes all the labour-intensive work away and replaces it with well-crafted professional results. That in my humble opinion is something more than worthy of embracing and celebrating.

It has to be said that it is largely thanks to Tesla, under the stewardship of Elon Musk, that today there are no less than forty different models of electric cars and forty million examples on the roads today.

It has recently been rumoured that although Apple seemed to have ditched their plans to join the party with its self-driving car, it may well make a comeback. This will be great news if it turns out to be true. And that is because all AI, be it a computer program for writing and publishing, or a car to get you to work or the shops and back, is intended to make our lives easier, safer and better. The more control that we have over the things that we use, the better will be the outcomes. Imagine a day when there are fewer accidents and fatalities on the roads because the AI car will not get drunk or tired. That is surely something we should all welcome with open arms.
